So the single most important thing when it comes to your business's website is how it's ranked by Google and the other major search engines, right?

Wrong.

Sure, it’s important to have your website show up on the first page of search results. Let’s face it – how often do you turn to page two, or three, or ten, when you’re looking for something online? But it’s a common misconception that page rankings are the only thing that counts when it comes to the internet.

Your Website Page Rankings

Your ranking on Google doesn’t determine how much business you get (although that’s a part of it). Actual traffic to your website determines how much business you get. Think about it – not everybody searches using the same keywords. Not everybody who clicks on your website came from a search engine.

In fact, some of the companies we’ve worked with actually outperform their competition in terms of website traffic, even though they may have a lower ranking according to a search engine.

You should always focus on the bigger picture. You know page rankings are crucial, but you should now know they’re not the whole story. That’s why it's best to use a variety of techniques to ensure traffic is driven straight to your company’s website. You should use social media, marketing campaigns, press releases, and organic search engine optimization strategies, to lead as many people to your business as possible. The way we see it; you should not care how someone finds your website, as long as they find it!

The Success of YOUR Business

We know that a website’s success can’t be judged solely on its page ranking. You should always use Google Analytics to measure how many people visit your site each day, because the number of potential clients or customers you attract to your website is always the most important thing.

When it comes down to it; website traffic should trump web page rankings every time.

I do agree with this to an extent. holding a #1 spot on search engines gives you more rankings.

ArtMan, from experience - we occasionally get clients who contact us saying they are "unhappy with their rankings" without realizing that different people search using different keyword phrases. Though a website might not come up at the top of the list for some words, it will come up for others. More traffic means more sales. You could be #1 for a specific keyword but if you only get 10 visitors a week, what good is that #1 ranking?

I would agree and disagree to a point, if you have rankings for numerous keywords and you can readily get information about how many times keywords are type into the Google Search Bar, it helps to get more keywords, and use a combination of other traffic driving factors to your site. Holding number on for one keyword? No me, I would rather be position five for 15 keywords.

Hi Greg, you're absolutely right with your last statement. We have had many clients think that they need to be number one for a certain keyword phrase when in reality, not many users are searching using that particular phrase.
