I recently overlooked a great product that works because of the package design. Not only did I need this product, but I had this product in my hands several times before putting it back on the shelf. Basically, I judged a book by it's cover.

For several months, I would be at the grocery store looking for a product to get rid of the yellowing of my toenails. I kept picking up the boxes with the shiny packaging - boxes that had the creative "medical sounding" names with the hi-tech looking artwork with pictures of great looking feet.

package-design-feetThe boxes with the fancy packaging kept getting my hard earned cash but didn't deliver on solving my problem. Instead, I was getting a temporary fix for athletes foot that would come back later causing me to buy yet another product with a fancy box.

Every time I would decide to buy another brand, I kept passing up this box for a certain brand that was designed with a non-complimentary color scheme working for it. On the cover was a picture of close-up feet with what appeared to be really nasty foot fungus. The photos were not pretty and in the back of my mind, I kept thinking how my feet were nowhere near that bad.

Judging a Book By It's Cover

Poor color choice, bad pictures of foot fungus, and definitely not a photo of a foot model kept me from taking this product off the shelf and giving it a try. Little did I know, this would be the product that actually WORKS!

I constantly think about the package design of this product. If the package had been different, I would have bought this product a long time ago but instead, I was spending my money on other products with fancy packaging and great graphic design.

Package design obviously works. This example makes me think about how something so simple can be a decisive factor between selling a product or missing the sale!
